Eleuthera is one of the most beautiful, natural islands
in the Bahamas. It has rolling green hills, dramatic cliffs, sheltered coves, breathtaking inland lagoons and caves, coral
reefs teaming with tropical fish, and pristine pink sand beaches that stretch for miles. The island is over 110 miles
long but hardly more than a mile wide in some places. At 'Glass Window Bridge', in the northern
part of the island you can see the deep navy blue Atlantic Ocean and the calmer, aquamarine Bight of Eleuthera simultaneously.
The quaint colonial villages
take us back in time, to the island's pilgrim settlers who arrived over 350 years ago and named the island Eleuthera,
Greek for 'Freedom'. History surrounds you each step of the way, with stone buildings still displaying their hand carved stone
which was acquired from the local quarry. The locals will make you feel right at home, and share stories of ancestors
arriving 100 years ago or so. The island's rich red soil produces a variety of vegetables and exotic fruits such as
pineapples, mangos, papayas and avocados. The flora is breathtaking! The vibrant colors of bougainevilla and hibiscus
will dazzle you! Keep your camera handy at all times and try to catch the motion of the hummingbirds as they
sip the nectar from the tropical flowers.
Eleutheras main settlements are:
- Windermere Island - a private and gated Island which sits off
the coast of Eleuthera and is accessed by a guarded bridge. It is a favorite playground for the rich and famous. At one
time, its visitors included Prince Charles and Princess Diana. The island is 5 miles long and has one of the world's most beautiful
wide, pink sand beaches running its entire length.
- Spanish Wells - famous for its fishermen
- Dunmore Town/Harbour Island - one of the busier areas.
It has a powdery pink sand beach, as well as pastel-coloured clapboard houses, narrow lanes, and quaint shops.
- Gregory Town - with world-class surfing at nearby Surfer's
Beach
- Hatchet Bay
- site of the famous Hatchet Bay Caves
- James Cistern - known for its excellent fishing off James Point
- Governor's Harbour - seat of local government and many
beautiful colonial buildings
- Palmetto
Point - surrounded by beautiful beaches
- Savannah Sound - it's name derived from the savannah, which extends from
3½ miles at the back of the settlement, and the bay behind the savannah
- Tarpum Bay - a beautiful little fishing village, great
spot for purchasing the freshest fish from the local fishermen and also site of a small artists' colony
- Rock Sound - one of Eleuthera's largest settlements with
its own airport and unique blue ocean hole
Whatever your tastes or desires, Eleuthera has it all! Magnificent
beaches, great surf, peaceful coves, lush green vegetation, quaint historical settlements, and a relaxed, carefree atmosphere.
You can do everything or do absolutely nothing. Enjoy your new found freedom!
